Developmental Delays

A developmental delay refers to a child who has not gained the developmental skills
expected of him or her, compared to others of the same age. Delays may occur in
the areas of motor function, speech and language, cognitive, play, and social skills.
Signs and symptoms of delay in children vary depending on the type of area
affected.

Assessments can:

1. Help identify possible developmental problems and the need for further
evaluation
2. Recognition of the child's strengths and deficits
3 Identification of the children's eligibility for programs (such as early intervention programs)
4. Help in planning appropriate interventions.
